Human Rights and Climate change : The African Climate Activists’ Responses

Esther Oluwatoyin Agaja  Project Coordinator, Fridays for Future Nigeria

For decades, there has been an increase in extreme weather conditions all across the planet. Our climate is changing rapidly with hotter summers, colder winters, broader temperature swings, rising sea levels, less sea ice cover, melting glaciers, more frequent storms, etc. the climate change issue polarizes as the weather becomes more severe.

As per Allison and Miller (2019), climate change is far too important to be left to science alone. The humanities, with their emphasis on values, are equally relevant to the climate change debate and whatever is a threat to our life and livelihood, I believe is violation of our human rights. This is why the voices of climate activists across Africa must be heard and taken seriously, as they are aware of the direct effects of the climate crisis in their communities, and they must be engaged and supported, as only through collective effort can we address the climate crisis.
