Round Table

Morten Kjærum, Director, Raoul Wallenberg Institute

It has been a very long journey to link human rights and climate change. But as we have heard, it has now been established as a right to have a clean and safe environment. It’s a big step forward. But it’s not only in law and theory, but also in reality. In realities on the ground where people live. This is where we really need to focus, and that's why it is so important to have relevant discussions these days. The World Human Rights Cities Forum in this way can be a very important milestone in the journey, focusing on what human rights can contribute to addressing climate change, in general, hold people accountable, as well as and not least, alleviate the consequences for those that climate change impact. I will focus, in particular, on the latter point – how can we better help those people that are faced with the consequences of climate change.

In conclusion, many other things being considered, I have focused on three issues that we in our work see as essential, namely, the systematic approach, the dialogue between governance structures, and the engagement of citizens. Addressing these three elements will help our journey ahead in addressing the consequences of climate change.
